Every cell in your body has two receptors. One is for thyroid hormone and another is for vitamin D3. You may know that your thyroid gland runs your metabolism. But how does that works? and if you understand it, then you can easily improve your Thyroid Gland function.

I'm Jothi PremSanker, Nutritionist and Dietitian founder of Xulon Zoe wellness Center. I have helped many women with hypothyroidism through Diet, Nutrition, and Lifestyle.

So, let's start with the question as to how the thyroid hormones run your metabolism. Then you can understand what hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid) is. Every cell in your body must have a thyroid hormone to create energy.

So, every cell in your body has these little organelles called mitochondria. The function of mitochondria is to convert glucose into an energy source that the body can use which is ATP.

The mitochondria's job is to produce usable energy ATP. But mitochondria will not do it unless it is told to do so by your thyroid hormone!

The active form of your thyroid hormone is T3. Think of T3 as a plug that plugs into your mitochondria. That's how can Produce energy.

For these mitochondria to produce energy, T3 needs to get inside the cell. Then it binds into the mitochondria and after which glucose starts getting converted into ATP.

You have trillions of these cells in your body. When you have enough thyroid hormones to get into the cells, then your body becomes like a well-oiled machine. Then you feel vitalized, alive, and always full of energy.

But what if something is goes wrong and T3 is not working for you? well, that is what hypothyroidism is all about.

When Something is going wrong at some stage of the above process, the hypothyroidism condition arises.

Now the Four Simple Problems in Hypothyroidism are:

1. T3 does not bind into the mitochondria, or

2. Thyroid Gland might not be able to produce enough thyroid hormone, or

3. Thyroid Gland produces enough hormone, but are in an inactive (T4) form, having trouble in converting from inactive form (T4) to the active form (T3), or

4. There is enough active form (T3) having problems getting into your cells and thus doing its function.

Everyone with hypothyroidism will have one or many of the above problems. These can be solved by Diet, Nutrition, and Lifestyle. Hence, it's reversible.
